This study aims to explore the European policies of sequent political establishments in Great Britain in the 1990s, primarily focusing on Tony Blair’s first term as Prime Minister. Blair’s EU policies are compared to the preceding Conservative governments of John Major and Margaret Thatcher with regard to key EU projects, such as the EU’s Common Defence and Security Policy, the enlargement of the EU, and the question of adopting the single currency. These three policy areas were included in the Labour Party’s 1997 general election manifesto as essential means of gaining a leadership for Britain within the EU. The first chapters of the paper examine the British perception of the development of the European integration in the post-war period, and investigate the reasons of British reluctance towards joining a supranational organisation. The following chapters examine the European policies of the Thatcher and Major governments concerning the challenges and their decisionmaking in connection to them. The last chapters discuss Tony Blair’s political career and his fundamental role in the reformation of the Labour Party, transforming it into New Labour. Also, it is investigated how Blair’s policies changed Britain’s marginalised position in the European Union. The study is particularly relevant, especially since the Blair government is considered to be the last government that fostered the most pro-European British policy in recent decades. Also, in light of the results of the Brexit referendum, where Britain voted to leave the EU, the period witnessing one of the most debated issues in contemporary mainstream politics came to an end.
