This article will begin with an overview of the clarification of ‘smart’ prisons concept and states that two limbs are emerging in the development of ‘smart’ prisons: technologies that benefit prison authorities through heightened security and surveillance and technologies that may directly benefit people in prison and their rehabilitation. The paper will provide an overview that smart digital detention technologies how stand to benefit prisoners (digital platform called Prison Cloud in Belgium and Smart prison concept of Finland) and prison authorities (for example use of AI, robotic forms of monitoring and surveillance and radio-frequency identification bracelet in USA and Asian countries). The study briefly also describes the Hungarian smart prison project.
