Abstract

The Patent published by the emperor on the 1st of September caught the Lutheran Church unprepared. The government in Vienna aimed to prohibit any form of public protest. At the end of November a search was conducted at the home of Baron Antal Radvánszky, one of the most vocal opponents of the Patent, who was the Lord Lieutenant of Zólyom County in 1848. His private letters seized by the police reveal various potential courses of action: beginning to reorganize the church district according to the Patent while protesting; starting the reorganization, but only partially abiding by the Patent; having the secular elite be removed from the church organization, and begin passive resistance; or the parishes demanding the suspension of the Patent, going against the prohibitions, openly confronting the government. The common strategy was forming slowly.
