Abstract
Ján Pravdoľub Bella (1836–1924) was a journeyman saddler, innkeeper, then schoolteacher, as well as the notary of the Slovak pro-patent Lutheran congregation in Pest in the early 1860s. Slovak historians used his example to emphasize the connection between patriotism and pro-patent beliefs. Archival sources indicate, however, that this idealized image of Bella is based on his own self-representation. The primary factor in Bella’s decisions was the sense of duty of a family man, and he used the connections he built during the patent conflict to further his career. Important conclusions can also be drawn by examining the fate of the Bella family, which is considered to be part of the Slovak national pantheon. Ján’s father and brothers lived apart from the national movement in Pest or abroad, where their Slovak identity and their nostalgic longing for their homeland could only be expressed through poetry.
