Abstract

The ambush at Losonc on 24 March 1849 was not one of the longer, larger scale, often debated engagements of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49. The skirmish between two groups of altogether fewer than 2000 soldiers lasted only about one or one and a half hours, and it ended with an undeniable victory for the Hungarian side. The size of the battle, however, was clearly outweighed by its significance: the commanders of the two opposing sides were quite preoccupied with the circumstances of the battle, as well as the conclusions that could be drawn from it. For this reason it is important to examine these events through contemporary sources, including the antecedents and consequences of the ambush.
