Absztrakt (kivonat)

This paper wishes to contribute to the institutional, teaching and research history of the professorship of György Bónis at the universities of Cluj-Napoca and Szeged in 1940- 1957 on the centenary of the University of Szeged. At the same time, it seeks to draw attention to the significance of György Bónis’s research activity and publications on legal folk customs and the study of folk law between 1939 and 1956, which he consistently regarded to be a part of his legal historian work. His early reviews already demonstrate an interest in folk law research. His first theoretical and methodological articles written on the subject in 1939 pointed out the importance of exploration and the understanding of legal folk customs also from a legal historical perspective. As a professor of legal history at the Franz Joseph University of Cluj-Napoca, he wished to carry on with the research of legal customs, which he began earlier upon encouragement from István Györffy. Bónis aimed to organise a kind of ‘model’ research, to develop a guiding methodology, and to write a research summary. Unfortunately, the entire research material from 1942/1943 collected with students of legal history from the University of Cluj-Napoca covering 25 settlements of the Kalotaszeg (Ţara Călatei) region was destroyed during the war. Nevertheless, György Bónis continued his research as a professor of the University of Szeged as well: he organised one of the last researches on Hungarian folk law (1939-1948) in the village of Tápé in 1948. György Bónis taught Hungarian and universal legal history at the Szeged Faculty of Law in 1947-1950, he was a professor and head of department in 1950-1957, and served as vice dean in 1955. Due to his role in the 1956 Hungarian uprising and war of independence he was made redundant in 1957, and was never allowed to teach again. He continued his career in legal history as an archive researcher. György Bónis delivered his final lecture on legal ethnographical research in 1956, seeking to address political issues and the attacks against him. After that he only had the opportunity to help the ‘one-man’ research conducted by his student Ernő Tárkány Szücs from the background. The political rehabilitation of Professor György Bónis at the University of Szeged took place in 1989, four years after his death. However, as a legal historian and a prominent figure of Hungarian legal custom studies, he has been, and continues to be present in Hungarian legal history.
