In my paper, I present the path of life of Sándor Kornél Túry and his and his work’s connection with compulsory non-bankruptcy settlement. Sándor Kornél Túry was a full professor of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences in the University of Szeged in the Interwar period, he led the Chair of Commercial Law between 1926 and 1940. After the Second Vienna Award, the university removed to Kolozsvár (Cluj), and he followed this institution. He was elected dean two times, firstly in Szeged he became dean in the summer of 1935, the second time he was on the top of Faculty in Cluj in 1944. He played a key role when the faculty left Kolozsvár (Cluj) the second time. After that he continued his academic career in Budapest because he did not want to return to Szeged after the Second World War. His scientific work was appreciated by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1939, when he was elected Corresponding Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. But it was not unsatisfactory for him, he desired a full professor status in Pázmány Péter University in Budapest (today Eötvös Lóránd University), because it was the first, the most significant higher education institute in Hungary and it was a social rank in this period. His dream realised due to the socialist arrangement of the university in 1949, when the most famous commercial legal scholar, Ödön Kuncz was forced to retire, and he could fill the position of Kuncz. But he worked for this university for a short time, since he was retired from the renamed Eötvös Lóránd University in 1951. Before his academic career, he worked for Section of Legislative of the Ministry of Justice from 1918 to 1926. It was an important part of his professional history because he based his reputation in legal circles in this position. His most significant achievement as councillor of the Ministry was the creating of modification of the decree on compulsory non-bankruptcy settlement procedure in 1926. These proceedings were introduced in Hungary in 1915, the government gave an alternative to bankruptcy procedure with this regulation. It was a more modern process than the Hungarian bankruptcy procedure of 1881, therefore it was most frequently applied in the case of insolvency in the Interwar period. The goal of the compulsory non-bankruptcy settlement was the establishing a compromise between debtor and creditors, within that the debtor paid determined proportion of his debts. The creditors with the 2/3 of the total claims should agree the compromise offer of the debtor, and the creditors who did not agree the compromise was forced to renounce a determined part of their claims by the agreement, therefore it was “compulsory” settlement. The government wanted to modify the decree based on the practical experiences after 10 years of its coming into effect. The young Túry got this task in the Ministry, which gave him a big reputation because this process had an outstanding significance in the Hungarian economical and legal life. In addition to the decree, he also wrote a commentary for the modified legal regulation in 1926, and he published two papers concerning his work. But he did not deal with this topic in his further scientific publications, his main research topic was the insurance law, his colleagues called him “insurance lawyer”.
