description: The paper will argue against the general assumption that a clause can contain more than one topic, but only one focus operator, across languages, hence Topicalization is adjunction, and Focus Movement is substitution into Spec,FP. In fact, Topicalization is likely to be substitution into the specifier of an iterable TopP - just as Focus Movement is substitution into the specifier of an iterable FP. The output of multiple Focus Movement is not transparent because Focus Movement into Spec,FP goes together with V-movement into F. In the case of multiple Focus Movement, the V is cyclically raised into the highest F position, as a result of which only one focus operator precedes the verb: the rest of them follow it. It will be shown that postverbal foci occupy scope positions, hence they cannot be foci in situ, to be preposed in LF.
