%X Supposedly, the significant renewal of storytelling in the Hungarian literature begin at the end of the 19th century. In this period, concretely the fin de siécle, a lot of writers appeared simultaneously, who had similar style in writing – for example: Elek Gozsdu, István Petelei, Gyula Szini, Viktor Cholnoky, or Károly Lovik. Lovik played important role in the renewal of literature, which based on the short story, that is why, he and his peers were the connection between the premodern and modern period. In my thesis, I examine a short story – Károly Lovik: The dog of death –, which could be ideal example to represent attributes of modern narrative. In my point of view, the short story could be interpretable along Paul Ricoeur's term - narrative identity – and other notions, which would be derived form it: sameness, metaphor, identity. However, I take notice of Sigmund Freud's theory about the dream, which declare, that the dream is equivalent with the desire fruition. At the end of my analysis, we could see, that the mentioned ways make Lovik's short story is the typical example of fin de siécle phenomenon, moreover the par excellence type of modern storytelling.
