%X Aldilà del comune principio di negatività, il Medioevo talvolta dimostrava un atteggiamento eccessivo e contraddittorio nei confronti di Satana. C’è una sostanziale differenza tra le rappresentazioni artistiche e retoriche di una distorta figura spaventosa ed il concetto del diavolo innocuo nelle speculazioni astratte. Dante sintetizzava diversi elementi nel suo Lucifero: come concetto, seguendo sant’Anselmo, il diavolo diventa un mezzo della Provvidenza divina, ma nella sua visualizzazione manteneva anche alcuni elementi dell’aggressività che vivevano nella tradizione popolare. Il diavolo è simmetrico alla Trinità ed agli angeli ma, inesistente da solo, non può minacciare l’umanità come forza esterna ed indipendente. Il bene e il male si trovano nell’amore che è in movimento, e che deve fare una scelta giusta, estremamente difficile. Eppure, la qualità della scelta morale decide come qualcuno possa entrare nell’eternità. Il diavolo di Dante è reietto alla periferia dell’universo, ed è piuttosto una figura patetica e grottesca, non un personaggio dotato di potere reale. In addition to the common principle of negativity, the Middle Ages had an extreme, sometimes contradictory attitude towards Satan. There is a substantial difference between the medieval artistic, rhetorical representation of a distorted figure and the devil’s concept in the abstract theological speculations. Dante put together several elements creating his own Lucifer: as a concept, it is similar to the “gentle” devil of Anselmus of Canterbury, but as he appears in the depths of hell, his aggressive sight, comes back to popular tradition (in preaching, tales, painting). The devil is symmetrical with the Trinity and the angels, but as an independently non-existent external force does not threaten humanity. The right and wrong, the good and bad are in the love in motion which makes a difficult choice between them. Yet the quality of moral choices will decide as someone enters into eternity. The Devil of Dante is outcast to the periphery of the Universe, is much more pathetic and grotesque figure than a real power factor.
