The renowned mining academy, the steady rise in productivity and revenues brought economic prosperity and a flourish-ing culture to the town. The number of students, intellectuals, mine engineers and mine officials increased and the middle class strengthened, while the stan-dard of living and the state of health of the miners, most of whom were Slovaks, remained on an extremely low level. The study, based on the writings of two mine doctors active in Selmecbánya, outlines the health conditions of the non-ferrous metal miners in Selmecbánya in the 18th and 19th centuries. The work of the two doctors, Johann Georg Hoffinger (1756–1792) and Imre Tóth (1844–1928) spans a period of a hundred years, from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Their principal goal was an improvement in health conditions, and although they specialised in miners’ diseases and miners’ health, they examined all aspects of the work and life of this occupational group. %Z Bibliogr.: p. 105-107. és a lábjegyzetekben ; összefoglalás angol nyelven
