description: The folk pictures appeared in Russia in the second part of the 17th century and soon became very popular. Among them, there were paper icons but didacticmoral pictures as well, which represented Eve's creation, the history of the handsome Joseph or the appearance of Michael archangel before Joshua. Sometimes pictures about magic tale-heros or comic folk-scenes occured as well. According to historians, these pictures appear not only in the home of simple folk but the rooms of czar Aleksey, his daughter, Sophia and his son, Peter were decorated by them. As time passed by, the method of creation of the pictures changed. In the firstthird part of the 18th century, the technique of etching appeared, and towardsthe end of the 19th century, the chromolitographic method was used. The most popular were the christian-theme pictures.
