%X The 1949 constitution guaranteed freedom of religion in Hungary but in 1946 the communist party set the goal of destroying the churches, and the political police (AVO, AVH), reorganised several times, were given a major role in this. The daily reports of the ÁVH Békés county department for the period 1950- 1955 have survived, although with gaps. They give a picture of the information obtained from informers on religious persons and priests, on the observance (in Battonya, Békésszentandrás, Kevermes, Dombegyháza, Dombiratos, Kétegyháza) of church feasts that were abolished in the 1950s, on a pilgrimage regarded as a demonstration against the regime (Mezőkovácsháza-Magyarbánhegyes), and on the opinion of the priesthood concerning day-to-day politics (Békéscsaba, Gyula, Füzesgyarmat).
