KW - Belpolitika - Magyarország - 20. sz. N2 - Between the two world wars conservativism appeared as the central ideology of the Hungarian political system. The official and most direct manifestation of this idea was the restoration of the second chamber of the parliament in 1927. Officially the function of the institution was to express interests, assist compromise and guarantee the separation of powers. In spite of this, the second chamber?s main task was to stabilize the political system and protect the conservative regime from any significant changes. During the 17 years of the second chamber, it confronted the dictatorial acts of the far-right, but also hindered the democratic reform efforts of the opposition. However, the second chamber did not only function as a servant of the political elite, despite its lack of legitimacy, the institution took part in serious debates on certain topics e.g. economic issues, constitutional amendments, or anti-Jewish laws.
