One goal is to investigate how the hermetic tradition of the 17thcentury Scottish-English lodges lived on in the ritual practice of English freemasonry in the age of Enlightenment. Accordingly, it highlights some parallels and dissimilarities between the hermetic and masonic traditions. A second objective is to examine whether the doctrine of exaltatio — referring to the programme of deification recognized by György E. Szőnyi in the writings of henneticists such as Pico della Mirandola — can be traced in masonic rites of passages. The findings partially rely on the analysis of some hitherto overlooked 1e-century masonic ceremonies, including the earliest known ritual of the Royal Arch. %Z Bibliogr. a lábjegyzetekben ; összefoglalás angol nyelven
