TY - CHAP T3 - Móra Akadémia N2 - The first volume of Dezs? Tandori, A Fragment for Hamlet, was published in 1968, and thus ? to quote Miklós Fogarassy?s Tandori guide: ?an event in the history of poetry occurred?, which Tamás Tarján also refers to as one of the turning points in the new history of the Hungarian lyre. Tandori appeared on the scene of the Hungarian lyric literature with conscious and radical steps, laying the foundations for a new poetic approach with just over half a hundred fragmentary poems written between 1959 and 1968. In these poems, Tandori formulates questions to prompt the poetic crisis of a particular moment in literary history; whether it is still possible to write a poem at all when it looks like everything has already been written. Influenced by Wittgenstein?s philosophy of language, he raises questions about the capacity and potential of language, and affected by contemporary existentialist authors, he brings existence into question. In Tandori?s enigmatic poems, that are full of paradoxes, there are the unspeakable, the insinuations of silences, the uncertainty of unfinished poems ? in short, a bunch of fragments. The question may arise: is it plausible that these fragments would be parts of a certain Whole? In my study, standing on the ground of the philosophy of post-secularism, I sought to examine the poems of A Fragment for Hamlet with the help of Martin Buber?s I and Thou and Emmanuel Lévinas?s book of Totality and Infinity, as well as Ludwig Wittgenstein?s philosophy of language. With the assumption that the other entity in the poems is a transcendent one, I searched for new interpretations that this perspective might bring about.
