N2 - In the 21st century hell is closer to us than ever before: the countless wars, climate disasters, unsupervised technological progress and economic instability have taken their toll on our world, creating a landscape worthy of being called ?hell on earth?. Robert Menasse guides the reader through the all-too-familiar hells of human history, drawing parallels between the life of the Jewish scholar Menasse ben Israel, who lived at the time of the Spanish Inquisition, and that of his descendant, Viktor Abravel, who was born on the day the Austrian State Treaty was signed (1955). The paper aims to thematize how Hell is evoked in Robert Menasse?s unusual historical novel, while also analyzing how certain elements of the literary representation of hell (and the epic katabasis) appear in the novel.
