%X Emil Makai does not belong to the highly respected writers of Hungarian literature. He was son of a local rabbi, and in his short life he was a successful translator of Jewish poems and dramas, and also wrote poems and plays of his own. He took part in the Jewish emancipation movement. He made a living by working as a journalist--an editor of A HĂŠt (The Week) periodical--, and as a theatrical translator. He was aware of the changes that modernity brought into literature. His poems speak about the new challenges of metropolitan life, thus enriching our national literature.
