The effect of speech tempo has mostly been observed at the segmental level, or in connection with variations in duration and pauses. The effect of speech tempo on intonation has rarely been studied. The aim of this study was to examine if there are connections between tempo variabilities (accelerated articulation and speech tempi) and intonation. Our hypothesis was that accelerated articulation tempo would interrelate with FOmaxima and/or FOminima values as well as their differences. In addition, we supposed that durations of speech sequences (between two pauses) would increase as a consequence of intention to accelerate the articulation and speech tempi. The reason for that is that there are less occurrences of pauses in the accelerated spontaneous speech. The results show that the intended acceleration of one’s speech when speaking spontaneously is an extremely difficult task. The data revealed that the change of the intonation patterns influenced by tempo heavily depends on the speaker.
