Hearing-based researches consider the phenomenon known as final rise as a feature of spontaneous speech. In our research we compared the different speech produc­ - tion-in young people-with regard to the-prevalenee of final-rise. The main findings are as follows. More final rises were realized by women than men. Final rise is more prevalent in monologic texts than in conversation. Final rise was most frequent in speech tasks which involved the greatest cognitive effort. In conversation, final rise is as frequent at clause boundaries as elsewhere. These verify the findings of the literature: low pitch in itself is not a suitable characteristic of close; its combination with other features (e.g. pause length, the completeness of the grammatical structure, the beginning of a new intonation phrase etc.) can indicate the speaker's such intent.
