This paper provides a summary of the history and the grammaticalization of the discourse marker hát. Based on the first group of data I demonstrate the various uses of this particle: adverbial, conjunctional and discourse marker usage. Information pertaining to discourse at first indicated that expressions with hát were related to stating and questioning. Later, independently of this context, hát started to indicate the attitude of the speaker. The questions used in the Sárospatak religious debate (1660) give evidence of this: debaters mitigated the face threatening acts using hát in questions. Today the use of hát as an adverb of place no longer exist, but it is still used to mark an adverb of time and the logical relation, while its most frequent use is as a discourse marker. An analysis of my corpus has shown that hát appears in rhetorical and debating questions, and helps interpretation: its function is to emphasize and intensify the rhetorical force of questions.
