The postposition végett means ’in order to’ in standard Hungarian, the postposition m/att ’because o f ... ’ gives the cause. Speakers sometimes confuse these two postpositions. In my paper I examine the history of végett. It arose in the 16th century, and it was mostly an adverbial modifier of purpose, but I have collected some data from the 16th century onwards, in which it is used as a causal complement. Simonyi (1895) wrote, that the postposition végett can follow a) demonstrative and interrogative pronouns, b) abstract nouns, c) concrete nouns. In my paper I demonstrate, that the last two groups can unify, however, the abstract noun could be eliminated from this construction. That elimination explains the data in which we could not decide if the postposition végett is an adverbial modifier of purpose or a causal complement. It depends on the abstract noun which we insert into the construction. Why do the speakers use the same postposition to express ’the purpose of sg’ and ’the cause of sg’? The two adverbial complements have similar meanings, and if the ‘why’ precedes the action then it is the cause, and if it follows it then it is the purpose. The confusion does not cause any misunderstanding, because the context makes the meaning clear.
