The Hungarian king, Samuel Aba (1041—1044), is mentioned as the sororius of Saint Stephen the King in a 14th century chronicle. The word sororius has two meanings, brother-in-law and nephew, so on the basis of its meaning alone it is impossible to determine whether Samuel Aba married Saint Stephen's sister or the daughter of Saint Stephen's sister. As Samuel Aba became king by election and not by blood-ties, we cannot from this word draw the conclusion that he was Stephen's nephew. In fact the 14th century chronicle mentions the word sororius on three further occasions with the meaning brother-in-law and the word is never used in this source with its other meaning, which seems to suggest that Samuel Aba married King Stephen's sister (and not his sister's daughter). It has recently come to light that the first wife of the Hungarian king Charles Robert (1301—1342) was the daughter of Leo II, ruler of Halicz. The hitherto anonymous queen turned out to be called Mary. Since the second wife (of Polish origin) of Charles Robert was also called Mary, it is conceivable that traditions about the first queen merged with those about the second as time passed and finally her memory faded away completely. A document issued on 23rd June, 1306, in the name of Queen Mary, was issued by the first wife, indicating that the first wife was called Mary and that the marriage must have taken place before that date. There are signs which show that king Charles Robert's first marriage with Mary of Russia was an unhappy one and around 1309 the king was even considering divorce.
