A new phase began in the research into Jagiello-era estatism around the turn of the century. Differences between the old and the new approaches can best be illustrated by the debate between Dezsó Szabó and Gyula Szekfu on the history of the Jagiello-era diets. Dezs6 Szabó preserved the 19th century Romantic idea of history based on ancient traditions and described the Jagiello-diets against a background of political history. According to Gyula Szekfu the history of these diets cannot be presented without a background of social and administrative history. Szekfu provided an example of his idea of modern historiography in his work „Szerviensek és familiárisok" (Servientes et Familiares).
