In connection with the sources on the Hungarian landtaking the author came to the conclusion that only a few of them contain chronological references and these are probably inaccurate. The late Hungarian chronicle literature could not preserve the date of Hungarian conquest, and the dates provided by the foreign sources (Regino, Albericus, the Ancient Russian Chronicle) can also be questioned. Indirect sources may contribute to an approximate definition of the date of Hungarian landtaking. On the basis of the evidence provided by the 37th chapter of De Administrando Imperio the Oguz—Khazar attack against the Pechenegs can be dated to the period between 893—902 as well as the Hungarians fleeing from their homeland in Etelkoz. According to the Annales Fuldenses the Hungarians had already occupied the Transdanubian parts by 900. Historians defined the date of the Pecheneg attack on the Hungarians resulting in the Conquest on the evidence supplied by the 40th chapter of De Administrando Imperio. This passage describes the Hungarian—Bulgarian war, which has been dated to 895—896 on the basis of Annales Fuldenses, and this date given by Constantinus is associated with that Pecheneg attack in alliance with the Bulgarians, which triggered off the Hungarian Conquest. According to the author it is not obvious that the Pecheneg attack immediately followed the Hungarian—Bulgarian war. He draws attention to the problematical interpretation of the 40th chapter, especially to that question where the Hungarians were raiding at the time of the Bulgarian—Pecheneg attack. To define the date of the conquest the 41st chapter of De Administrando Imperio was also used as well as the theory in connection with a wave of people's wandering. Summarily the author's opinion is, that the conquest can be dated to the period between 895—900, however 895—896 can also be accepted, but it may be dated to about 900.
