It has been a debated issue, whether Álmos or his son, Árpád had been the first prince of the Hungarian tribal federation. According to a hypothesis Álmos (cca. 820 - 895?) was the first sacral ruler (kündü) of the Hungarians and he ruled over them for forty years (cca. 855-895). Five data or sources (the Turul legend connected with Álmos'birth, his assassination, Anonymus, the Zagreb - Várad Chronicles, Albericus) and an onomastic argument (the appearance of his name in the Arpadian-dynasty) seem to testify the principality of Álmos. The author of the study contradicts this theory, since the sources are belated (XIII-XIV. century), even if some of the them may be traced back to the Xlth century. Árpád (cca. 850 - 900/907?) has been considered by other scholars to be the first prince of the Hungarians. The author agrees with this opinion, which can be based on the testimony of four sources. The chronicle of Simon of Keza and the fourteenth century chronicle composition are late and therefore not authentic sources, but Constantine VIIs wcrk (DAI, written about 948 - 952), preserving the earliest Hungarian tradition and the chronicle of Georgius Monachus Continuatus (cca. 960) can be regarded as proofs for the principality of Árpád. So Árpád was the first elected prince, who allied with the Byzantines against Bulgaria (894-895) and was expelled by the Pechenegs from Etelköz. His name is rightly connected with the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin (cca. 895 - 900). Álmos was probably just a tribal chief, second in rank after Levedi in the Hungarian tribal federation.
