According to György Györffy in a French traveller's description from the beginning of the 14th century (Descriptio Europae orientalis) the memory and testimony of the tenth century dukedom in Hungary has been preserved. The author of the study contradicts this statement and proves, that the mentioned five dukedoms or bandoms (ducatus sive banatus) ruled by the sons of the king or nobles from the grace of the king, must relate to conditions characteristic of the 13th century, when these five dukedoms and the mixed administrational forms can be found in charters. Consequently the passage of the source referring to Hungarian dukedoms cannot be connected with a supposed dukedom of the 10th century, the existence of which is not testified by any credible sources.
