Absztrakt (kivonat)

The study deals with the problem of the connection between the characters of Levedi and Árpád and their ranks in the Hungarian tribal federation. In the 38th chapter of DAI Constantine VII. characterizes both Hungarian leaders of the ninth century. Their qualities (noble, brave, wise) have been regarded by scholars as abstract attributes of nomadic rulers and personal characteristic features as well. According to a theory Levedi•s noble origin can be a proof for his sacral rank (kündii), while the attributes of wisdom and bravery of Árpád can be connected with his military rank (gyula). The author of this article maintains, that there is no real difference between the characterization of Levedi and Árpád; both of them were noble (the nobility of Árpád's father, Álmos is testified by Hungarian chronicles and Anonymus), brave and wise. In spite of his outstanding virtues Levedi did not become a prince, possibly because he failed to found a dynasty. Besides his similarly excellent virtues Árpád had heirs, so he was found suitable for the rank of prince (kündü) and was elected by the Hungarians.
