The fact that the city of Szeged had acquired a privilege from king Béla IV (1235-1270) was only mentioned at the end of the 15th century. Establishing a more exact date may be helped by the historical event that the hospites of Szeged (who must have appeared in Szeged after 1242) were donated two pieces of property by the king in 1247. This in itself makes it probable that the original privilege did not concern the city, but the hospites only, and later their privilege was translated to the whole community, that is the whole city. Since among the hospes privileges issued by king Béla IV between 1242-1252 there is not one, in which the donation preceded the issue of the.privilege, but in several cases the actual granting of privilege was followed by a donation of landed property, the author came to the conclusion that the earliest possible date of Szegdd hospes privilege is 1242, while the latest possible one is 1247.
