At the turn of the 15-16th centuries the system of Hungarian defence against the Turks was based on the banderia(bataillons) of prelates, barons and counties as the mercenary army having been founded by king Mathias had to be disbanded because of financial reasons. These banderia consisted of 400 mounted cavalrymen, a half of them being heavy cavalry, the other half being light cavalry called hussars. The soldiers of these banderia were well trained, disciplened warriors, especially the ones serving in the banderia of prelates and barons. Heavy cavalrymen must have worn full armour, while the equipment of a hussar consisted of a helmet, a shield, a lance and a bow with arrows. According to the decrees of Hungarian diets the number of these soldiers should have been 26 750 in times of full mobilisation, which is quite a considerable force.
