Medieval nomads were regarded as warlike peoples as the chroniclers of the neighbouring civilisations recorded the attacks of the nomads against their kingdoms. The information was usually one-sided, since the writers of the attacked sedentary countries had a negative attitude towards their enemies. During the long history of relationship between the settled civilizations and the nomads the traditional accents fell on the wars against each other. In reality there was of course cooperation between nomads and the neighbouring empires including trade, diplomacy, conversion and cultural influence. A special field of contacts was the dynastic marriage, which had political connotations such as the part of a peace-treaty concluding a war or entering into alliance. This essay focuses on dynastic marriages of the Cumans with the neighbouring states i.e. the Rus Principalities, the Georgian Kingdom, the Second Bulgarian Empire and the Latin Empire, as well as Hungarian Kingdom in the eleventh-thirteenth centuries.
