This paper summarizes the biographical data of the life of István Báncsa — the first cardinal of Hungarian origin — and pinpoints the yet unclarified details to be explored by further research. Due to his education and learnedness in ecclesiastical matters István Báncsa was able to advance quickly in the church hierarchy, and as early as 1240 he was appointed bishop of Vác. At first he had good relations with king Béla IV (1235 -1270), who employed him as his leading diplomat during the Mongol invasion, and nominated him archbishop of Esztergom in 1242. He became known by the Holy See when sent to Italy as an envoy of the king. Following the loosening of relations between Hungary and the Holy See his ties to his king gradually deteriorated while those to Rome became stronger. Pope Innocent IV appointed him cardinal in 1252. István Báncsa had difficulties fitting in his new surroundings. He was, at first, planning to return to Hungary, but after 1253 had to abandon his plans for good. He did not play an important role in the increasing struggles for supremacy in the king's court following the solution of the problem of German interregnum. He was actively involved in solving the internal problems of the church. He avoided the struggles between different cardinals' interest groups. His personality and spirituality is best revealed through his close ties with orders of mendicants and eremites.
