Sir Aurel Stein, the Hungarian-British archaeologist and orientalist, led 4 expeditions to Inner Asia in the 1st half of the 20th century. KharosthI documents which prove the presence of the early Indian culture in Inner Asia, are one of the most important part of the finds of these expeditions. But I must add that nobody has done the complex assessment of these documents or their comparison with the archaeological material so far. This article examines the exact circumstances of the excavation of the KharosthI sources, touching upon the archaeological methods of Stein and asks the question: what happened to the documents after their finding. We can say that Stein's activity must rank among the highest standard excavations of his age. The majority of the KharosthI documents has been edited so far due to Rapson and his collegues but there are lots of questions yet to be answered. In my article I stressed the quantity determination of the exact number of the documents 'digged out' by Stein as the most urgent problem, but it is impossible to state because of some reasons. A new catalogue or a new critical edition could help us. Stein had estimated the archaeological, historical and linguistical importance of the documents properly when he first saw them. Although he wasn't prepared to edit these sources, he made strenous efforts to make them available to the scientific world. According to my opinion the role that Stein played in the discovery and acquaintance of this Inner Asian group of sources is outstandingly important.
