Absztrakt (kivonat)
The article gives an outline about the life and death of Bruno of Querfurt and about the later legends about him. The outline is mostly based on the works of Voigt, Lotter and D. Baronas and on the primary sources. Bruno tried to convert the so-called Black Hungarians, he had a mission among the Petchenegs, at the end he was killed among the Baltic tribes in 1009. The author adds parallels to the stories about Bruno relating to the cultural history. According to Petrus Damiani, the pagan ruler orders that Bonifatius (Bruno of Querfurt) has to pass an ordeal by fire: he has to pass between two burning wooden frames. This motif is like the ritual purification by fire that was a custom among the Mongols. Plano Carpini, a Franciscan monk had been before Khan Batu as a delegate of the pope in 1247. Carpini describes, that he and his fellows had to pass between two fires, to purificate themself before meeting the Khan Batu. The motif of the ‘eight Brunos’ has many parallels among the European legends. According to a later legend, the sister-in-law of Bruno gave life to nine twins. She tried to kill eight of them, but Brun saved the children, and he gave them his own name. The motif about a mother who tries to kill her twins, but they survive appears in the legend of the origin of the German family the Welfs as well as in the Hungarian legend about Miczbán and about the origin of the family Bocskai.
