The Italian architectural treatises of the first century of the Renaissance provided an appealing art programme for the contemporary monarchs with their humanist conception of the re-creation of the architecture of the ancient world. With the art patronage of Matthias, a king with a wide humanist education, the establishment of Italian architecture was made possible in Hungary as well. The king's library included the most significant architectural treatises, De re aedificatoria by Alberti, and Trattato di architettura by Filarete. An important piece of the evidence for their influence is the fact that the king had had Filarete's work, written originally in Italian, translated into Latin. The translation was made by the humanist scholar of the court, Bonfini, who in the course of the work consulted Vitruvius's classic De architectura, which was in most probability found in the king's Buda library as well. Further research will have to focus on the analysis of Bonfini's translation from the aspect of architectural terminology and Vitruvius's work.
