Absztrakt (kivonat)

The author gives a study about the institutes that enabled the missionary work (the pope, monasteries, kingdoms) and about the phases of Christianisation. He discusses the social background of the missionary work. In the Middle Ages Christianity was spread from the higher social strata to the lowers. The missionaries started their work in the royal court. The role of female members of the dynasties was important. The role of the vassals was important too, but Christianity reached the middle class lastly. The new religion was successful in those regions where a rising power centre – the court of a ruler - existed, and entered into an alliance with the Church. The lack of this power centre made the missionary work difficult, e. g. in Sweden and in the land of the Lutici and Obodrites. In Central Europe there were two types of resistance to the new religion. The first type was characterised by the reaction of the aristocracy - resisting to the dynasty that supported the Church – or by the conflict inside the dynasty that started the missionary work (e. g. the rule of Hakon Sigurdsson in Norway). The second type of the resistance was the so-called ‘heathen revolt’ with the participation of the lower strata (e. g. the revolt in 1046 and in 1061 in Hungary; the movements in 983 and 1018 in Bohemia; the revolts in 1005, 1034, 1079 in Poland; in 1068 in Kiev). How long does it take the religion to become an inner conviction? The author examines the laws of this period and the development of the parish-system in Central Europe, in the first place in Hungary. In Hungary, it was a slow process from the beginning of the 11th until the 13—15th century. In Western Europe, where the missionary work began earlier, the dense parish-system developed until the 11-12th century. The author mentions the changing of the burial customs and discusses the survival of the heathen customs. The church-system was organised, however, Christian values and ethics became slowly general, and it was a long process until people started to experience Christianity as real inner conviction.
