The years between 1521 and 1526 is the time of the establishment of closer ties in the history of Anglo-Hungarian relations. Driven by increasing threats on the part of Turkey, the Hungarian king Louis II asked for assistance through letters from the English king Henry VIII and Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the Archbishop of York. England's role in the politics of the Continent was mainly a balancing and stabilizing one in the rivalry between France and the Hapsburgs. In the end of this period England joined the League of Cognac, and thus it was in its interests for Hungary to be drawn away from the sphere of the Hapsburgs' interests. This is the most probable cause of the sending of aid by Henry VIII to Hungary, which although arrived too late, pointed to the fact that Hungary's potential role as a balancing force against the Hapsburgs gained importance in the eyes of English foreign policy.
