Absztrakt (kivonat)
Although North Africa has a relatively homogenous religious (Islamic) and ethno-linguistic (Arabs) pattern, there are huge territorial diff erences between the countries. Th ese partly derive from the diff erent historic impacts which aff ected the region. While Egypt was always closer to the Near East throughout history, the Atlas countries were connected more intensively to the European economic area. Th e relatively short period of colonization did not infl uence the countries of the region in the same way (four European powers appeared in fi ve North African countries). Th e contemporary North Africa could be regarded as a real semi-periphery area between the European Union and the Sahel Zone of Tropic Africa which connects the world regions of signifi cantly diff erent socio-economic development. Th e level of economic growth also diverges within the North African countries. While the Moroccan economy and employment are characterized by the importance of the agricultural sector, the fuel export generates high incomes in some other countries. Libya has the highest GDP per capita among all the African countries. Th e society and the economy show great territorial inequalities within the North African countries as well. Th e metropolises are outstanding elements of the North African geographic structure. Until the recent past, the political orientation of North African countries towards the Western World (especially to the USA) diff ered highly. However, the recent remarkable political changes require are consideration of the geopolitical situation in the North African region.
