In this present paper the author analyzes biographic memory, using the larger defi nition of myth by French scholar, Henrie Morier and Hungarian historian – philosopher, Péter Egyed. He is interested in what episodes of the life of József Kiss of Gegesi (Ghinești, 1820–1900) – an outstanding historical personality of the mentioned Szekler settlement – have survived in the local cultural memory, how a myth was built around his personality by the circulation of narratives, respectively how does this representation correspond to his real career. Th e paper is about the creative and performing intentions which regulate the editing and performance of the circulating stories, thus about mythicizing as a narrative strategy, and even if it deals with the authenticity of the stories, it has no intention of forming a heroisation- and mythicism-free historical consciousness in the reader, by enlightening the discrepancy between reality and fi ction. In the author’s opinion the tight connection between folklore and history has to be considered as a natural phenomenon, and it has to be made the object of scientifi c analysis likewise.
