This paper summarizes the newest results of the continuing research in the field begun in the 1970's. Surveying the results of the research, the paper gives an account of the activities of the inspector general „Carlos Kossuth", who acquired ill reputation in the Guano Islands of Peru in 1853—54, and posed as the brother of the leader of the Hungarian revolution, Lajos Kossuth. The paper also deals with the fate of Mátyás Lajos Maylánszky, who immigrated to and settled down in Brazil, founded textile factories and organized the Sorocabana Railway Company. This is followed by an account of the results of Olivér Onódy's research of Captain János Décsi's life in Brazil. The paper concerns itself in most detail with the „Nicaraguan adventure". In the late 1850's a large group of immigrants of the Hungarian revolution took part in an expedition led by William Walker against Nicaragua, with Lajos Schlesinger the commander of one of the regiments playing a leading role. The present paper gives an account of this expedition, stating that it served as an epilogue to Narciso López's expedition to Cuba in 1851, which also included a considerable group of Hungarians. The paper concludes by suggesting that there are two types of Hungarian immigrant groups in Latin-America. On the one hand we find the group of „elite-immigrants", with talented, multilingual and excellently educated members, who played an important role in the modernization process of Latin-America, and on the other hand, the group of „anonymous" immigrants, who in search of a way out of their difficulties joined mercenary armies and became the victims of military conflicts in Central America and the Caribbean.
