The excavation at Hidvégardô-Malomszôg added a lot of new data to our knowledge on the Bôdva Valley in the 9th century. The settlement features of this site are well known from other contemporary archaeological sites. Long-shaped, round-comered pits are dominant, but without any further information, one can only guess at their function. The two outer furnaces of Hidvégardô are of great importance because this furnace type is rare in the 9lh century. The lack of sunken buildings could allude to the use of timber houses. In spite of their low number, the pottery fragments are various. The firing methods are also various. The high amount of porous pottery with gas bubbles is a local speciality. The ornamentation of the pottery is uniform: it consists of wave bands and stripes. By analogy with contemporary material, pottery fragments can be dated to the 9 th century. The most outstanding item of the excavation is a horn jar. Researchers agree that horn jars were used as saltcellars and they are of Avar origin. The dating of the artifact is difficult; the motifs of the ornamentation refer to the 9th century. The ethnicity of the local population is hard to define. The Avar people must have survived the fall of the Avar Khaganate and might continue their life at the same area they lived before. Contrary to the linguistic sources, there was no evidence of local Slavic population in the excavated archaeological material. The population that lived at Hidvégardô-Malomszôg probably was of Avarian origin and it can be suggested this people lived there permanently met Hungarians of the Conquest Period.
