Absztrakt (kivonat)

Pendants belong to the object types decorating the costume of the Sarmatians of the Carpathian Basin. Examining the Late Roman Age cemetery of Apátfalva-Nagyút-dülő, I met pendants in several cases. In this cemetery they were found exclusively in female and child graves. A great number of studies have been published on pendants, however, it seemed to be important to examine these objects in a new, unique system of relations. It is notable that in Apátfalva the dead buried with pendants had pathological mutations which proposed a possibility of a new meaning of amulets. The main goal of my research was to point to the possible relationship between the use of amulets and the sickness of their bearer. My study is based on the proposal of the problem, and gives a support for further research. In the first half of my study I summarise the burial rite of the female and child graves found at the site and analyse the semantics of pendants known up to now. In the course of the functional examination of the amulets I point out that in the case of certain subtypes the role of painkilling is well known, so the magic impact of pendants, in all probability, was used in healing. In the next part I give an account on the anthropological results gained from the human bone material of the cemetery. In the chapter discussing pathological mutations I enter in details to the tuberculosis cases, because later I refer to possible relationship with amulets on this basis. The third part of my study represents burials similar to the ones containing pendants in Apátfalva. I analysed 49 graves from 23 sites and compared the results with that of from Apátfalva. I established that among the dead known from the 49 "foreign" sites, this complex phenomenon shows up only at 16 percents. If we add the burials from Apátfalva, we get 25 percents. Reviewing the burial rite of the cemetery and the complete anthropological examination I publish data that will promote the further research. This is only the beginning of the examination. I consider my primary task to get microbacterial DNA analysis of the bones from Apátfalva belonging to the dead who suffered from tuberculosis. The next step would be the pathological examination of the dead buried with pendants in the cemeteries of the Great Hungarian Plain. My data are included in a database that should be supplemented with results of wider range. Based on the we can learn more on the world of believes of the Sarmatians in the Carpathian Basin.
