The study deals with the ideology, activism and terror in Vajdaság of ORJUNA (Organizacija Jugoslovenskih Nacionalista – The Organization of Yugoslav Nationalists), which was an important terror organization playing a crucial role in the political life of the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes, the first South-Slavic state. The ORJUNA movement functioned as a paramilitary wing of the Democratic Party, basing its ideology on the integrative processes of Yugoslavism and centralized state. Hungarians, Germans and Jews – as the minorities of the newly established state – became its main target following the organization’s formation in 1922. As the main carrier of terror, the ORJUNA’s activism against the mentioned minorities beyond physical intimidation and pressure, was making these minority communities’ economic, political and cultural life impossible, and also enforcing the Slavic character of the newly acquired territories. The appearance and activities of ORJUNA on the historic territories of the Hungarian southern territories (Vajdaság) had a great impact not only the political and day to day life in general, but also determined the every day life of the Hungarians, Germans and Jews – from that point as minorities. Even though in the first decade following the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes the ORJUNA had a major influence on the internal affairs of the state, little written documents have survived on the organization itself. Though the surviving studies on the activism of ORJUNA deal with the actions of the organization carried out on the soil of Vajdaság, there have been no elaborate studies comprised which would deal with the organization’s actions focusing primarily on the mentioned area. This study for that purpose uses the Bácsmegyei Napló as its source from the period of 1922–1923, beside the relevant studies, and thus describes ORJUNA and its actions focusing on the minorities in Vajdaság.
