The Collective Letter of the Spanish Bishops, dated 1st July, 1937 was written by Gomá, the archbishop of Toledo, and justified Franco’s uprising. Franco was displeased at criticism leveled against him by some foreign Catholic intellectuals who condemned the execution of 16 Basque priests. Franco asked Gomá to promulgate a text, addressed to the bishops of the world, in order to give them authentic information about the Civil War. The letter was not published until the middle of August because Gomá wanted to persuade the unwilling bishops to sign it. Gomá simplificated the Basque problem and had no democratic sensibility in politics. The letter condemns the republican anticlericalism and the persecution of Catholics, but understates the sins committed by the nationalists. The letter was translated into 13 languages and had a smashing impact on the international press. Four bishops did not sign the letter. The most significant non-signer was Vidal y Barraquer, the archbishop of Tarragona.
