The war, that was raging in England between 1455 and 1485, is collectively known as the Wars of the Roses. It was named after the emblem of the two opposing dynasty: the white rose of York, and the red one of the Lancasters. But in fact, these symbols were not used by them, the term “Wars of the Roses” was invented later. However, many other emblem can be seen on both sides: for example, they used animals (real and also fictitiousones), plants, heavenly bodies, or even simple objects as symbols. This study presents some symbols that were actually used at this time, and tries to explain their meaning: why did the aristocratic families choose them? On the topic, many questions arise such as: What was Earl of Warwick, the “Kingmaker’s” symbol and what did it mean? How could a misanderstood symbol cause trouble on the battlefield? How could the Tudors dump on Richard III in their propaganda by using his emblem? With which symbols Henry VII tried to legitimize his power? Among other things, the study gives answers to these questions.
