Abstract
Vári-puszta lying in the northern part of Mohács Island was one of the early scenes of human settling. The substrate outcrop belonging to the high-level flood area of the River Danube is the unique occurrence of limestone of the island and also of the entire South Plains, which supplied the area’s population with building and tiling material throughout centuries. It resulted in the total laying waste of the island clod causing irreversible damages to our historical memorials being attached to it. We did not know much more about the historical background of the island clod signed as a geological blind spot for a long time. The basement outcrop were inhabited from the late bronze age. This unique valuable limestone deposit of this region was an important source of building material, and was mined over the centuries. Time to time fortifications were built and destroyed at this area. In the medieval age the stronghold of Sembec stood on the upthrust, localized by the artefacts (terminus post quem coins), the double trench system shown by the aerial photos, and primer sources. This stronghold was built on the ruin of a roman fort particularly from the previously scavenged materials, with high probability. This assumption was verified by toponomical, numismatical and archaeological evidences like the large scale square-like building stones and the angular shape of the structure. The existence a river crossing confirmed from the roman era to the 19. century. The main branch of the Danube flows at east side of the outcrop until the river regulation. This fact gave a high strategical importance of the involved area, and a good basis to localize the fortification. This study may gives enough material to perform an excavation on the Vári-puszta area, aimed to exactly identify the location and the origin of the ruins.
