Abstract
Large number of scandinavian-origin russes, varangians and kylfings (hungarian form is kölpény) came to Hungary from the mid 10th century. They settled down in the borderlands of the country and some settlements also wear their names within Hungary. They were used for border defense and as bodyguards like the well-known Varangian Guard in the Byzantine Empire.
