In the summer of 1950, the national and local organizations of the Workers’ Youth Association (Hungarian name: DISZ) were set up. At the same time, all other youth organizations were banned. All the fi nancial, media and organizational support of the party, ministry, local university and city government was exclusively enjoyed by DISZ. New university papers were launched in which the DISZ programs were presented, and they reported on various occasions of associations (meetings, camps, study competitions) and results. In the press, only teachers and students who were in favor of the party and the DISZ’s central policies were written in a positive tone. Th ose whose origins, religious or political beliefs did not coincide with the expectations of DISZ were placed in the crossfi re of attacks on murals, school radios, or slides that killed and mutilated. In addition, they massively excluded young people from all the universities and colleges of the country and forbade teachers from teaching. While they did not fulfi ll the most important social demands of students (dormitory dormitories, textbooks and notes, reduce the number of hours of work, and expand foreign language learning opportunities), DISZ did not even talk about the problems. Th e DISZ was therefore much more powerful than the strengthening of the power of national and local political leaders and the interest representation of young people.
