Absztrakt (kivonat)
In our study we have investigated three Scythian age eye knobby beads from the site of Mezőtúr. The beads dated to the 6th–5th century BC, are rare amongst the Iron Age finds of Hungary. From the archaeological point of view, most of the researchers agree that these findings came from Greek workshops of the Black Sea region, or from local workshops in the Carpathian Basin. To solve the questions about the provenance of the beads, we have applied archaeometric methods. The archaeometric investigations were carried out in the Institute for Geological and Geochemical Research of the RCAES HAS. Firstly, we used portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to measure the chemical composition of beads non-destructively. Further investigations were carried out with electron microprobe, micro-X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction analyses. Data indicate that the basic glass is of soda glass type. The blue colour was produced by cobalt and copper together, which are known colourants from the ancient world. The white colour of the glasses is due to calcium antimonate crystals, whereas lead-antimonate pigment is responsible for the yellow colour. However, inside the yellow pigments high iron content (3–4 wt% Fe2 O3 ) was measured by electron microprobe. Iron oxide can cause the ochre shade of the glasses and can stabilize the pigment. The high content of iron in lead-antimonate allows us to recognize a “new” production technology or to identify the source of raw materials in the future. Based on the chemical compositions and the archaeological results, we can conclude that the Scythian beads may originate from the Black Sea region. So far we do not know any workshops in the Carpathian Basin. We need further investigations to determine the exact provenance of the beads. Finally, we should mention Apollonia Pontica (at the Black Sea), where the compositions of the glass beads were similar to the beads from Mezőtúr.
