Natural waters always play an important role in the history of people. They had determinative importance in the selection of the place of the settlements, in everyday life, in livestock breeding etc. The wells were important water sources, and they could also function as community places. In my research, I deal with five wells recently excavated in the site of Kecskemét–Nagykőrösi utca 7–9. They can be divided into different structural types. They produced numerous finds and organic materials. My goal was to make a detailed analysis with the help of scientific examinations. During my work, I determined the age of the wells, based on to their finds and the results of dendrochronology. According to the results of the archaeobotanical and dendrochronological examinations, the site used to be a watery area. In my research, with the help of the written sources, monographs and scientific examinations, I attempted to determine the location and the role of the site in the former periods of the city. Kecskemét is located in a dry area, which is poor in water, and the wells were very valuable. This can be the reason why this site, which in addition was situated next to a main road, had a significant role in the life of the citizens. Based on my research, we can assume that the site of Kecskemét–Nagykőrösi utca 7–9 was situated outside, on the periphery of the former city, but despite of this, close to the city gates, in an easily approachable area. The five wells did not function in the same time, but they provided drinking water for the people from the 15th century to the 17/18th century. In my opinion, it would be possible to suggest the identification of the site with the “wells next to the Kőrösi road” mentioned in the written sources, but we need further archaeological excavations to support this hypothesis.
